What Fuels Trafficking? Understanding Demand
Before we talk recovery, we have to talk reason. What exactly is “demand,” and how does it drive human trafficking in our communities?We’ll explain what “demand” means in clear terms, how purchasing behaviors and online activity drive exploitation, and what prevention steps can disrupt this cycle. Anyone can be part of the solution.
Speaker is Eleanor Gaetan, PhD, Vice President and Director of Public Policy at the National Center on Sexual Exploitation and an opening welcome from Attorney General Jeff Jackson.
The Technology Challenge: Current Trends
Experts from Homeland Security Investigation and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children will describe current trends and tactics regarding how technology is being used to access, groom and exploit victims.
Labor trafficking is a complex crime that includes many different aspects, from harvesting to production to services. In the first session of the North Carolina Demand Reduction Task Force November 2023 Labor Trafficking webinar series, a panel of experts will introduce the dynamics of labor trafficking and how unethical supply chains feed the cycle of labor trafficking and labor exploitation.
Culture in the Crosshairs: Why Beliefs Shape Behavior
With insights from an advocate connected to professional athletics and youth leadership, the conversation will highlight the influence of role models and communities in challenging harmful norms. We’ll discuss how cultural messages, traditions and media can normalize exploitation. Participants will learn why shifting culture is essential to reducing demand.
Speaker for this session is Rickie Houston, Chief Program Officer at A Call To Men and national leader in gender-based violence prevention and cultural change.
Reducing The Threat
Leaders of the Invictus Project will explain how they are using technology to find and arrest online predators. Representatives from Street Grace will tell us how they are using AI to communicate with buyers and gather actionable evidence for law enforcement.
In the second session of the North Carolina Demand Reduction Task Force November 2023 Labor Trafficking webinar series, attendees will learn about the dynamics of labor trafficking through those who have lived experience. This panel discussion features three labor trafficking survivor-leader experts who will explain the dynamics of this specific type of exploitation.
Survivor Insights: Lessons from the Inside
Our Survivor leader shares her lived experiences to shed light on how demand directly impacts victims of trafficking. Now working as an advocate and educator, she offers a powerful perspectives on survivor-informed approaches to prevention. This session emphasizes why listening to survivors is critical in shaping effective strategies.
Speaker for this session is Jennifer, advocate and leader focused on educating others on familial trafficking and domestic violence.
Insights From Survivors & Direct Service Providers
Lived experience experts alongside of North Carolina direct service providers from A21, Daughters of Worth and Present Age Ministries will share their experiences regarding the use of technology to exploit others.
In the third session of the North Carolina Demand Reduction Task Force November 2023 Labor Trafficking webinar series, attendees will learn how supply chains can be ethical from professionals who are implementing standards to ensure their products and produce are exploitation free.
Your Role in the Ripple Effect: Join the Demand Reduction Effort
Highlights ways individuals, organizations, and communities can take action—through policy, partnerships, and advocacy—to reduce demand and create lasting change. You’ll hear from organizations that found innovative, effective ways to make a national impact.

Legislative Partnerships
In our final session, the Vice President & Director of Public Policy from the National Center on Sexual Exploitation, Eleanor Gaetan, Legislative Director for Senator Marsha Blackburn, Jamie Susskind, and IGGY Ventures’ founder, Rick Lane, will highlight legislation that has recently passed or is being discussed that aims to prevent technology-assisted exploitation
In the final session of the NC Demand Reduction Task Force’s November 2023 Labor Trafficking webinar series, we are putting it all together to unpack what foundations need to be laid for the state of North Carolina to have a comprehensive and effective plan to reduce demand for labor trafficking. This discussion welcomes a panel of experts who work in North Carolina addressing labor trafficking, from advocacy to policy.
